Voor deze soort geldt het volgende:In nests with horizontal temperature gradient in which ants were permitted to make a free choice, we observed even more distinct spontaneous rhythms of development. They were closely associated with changes in the thermopreferendum: in periods of active development ants kept their brood in chambers with sufficiently high temperature, and in periods of diapauses in cool chambers.
[…] In the analysis of obtained results, typical endogenous-heterodynamic ants associated in their distribution with the northernmost ares of the paleartic should be considered first. These species of Camponotus s. str., Formica, Lasius, Leptothorax s. str. and Myrmica. They apparently need lower temperature during the inactive phase of the annual cycle.
De reden waarom dit wel moet voor de soorten die voorkomen in het palearctisch gebied:Endogenous-heterodynamic species of ants of the genera Acantholepis, Aphaenogaster, Crematogaster and plagiolepis distributed in more southern regions do not require any lower temperature for successful overwintering and reactivation. When they were kept at a temperature optimal for development during diapause, we did not observe such a catastrophic mortality as in northern species, although a high constant temperature is not an ideal condition for these ants.
Under conditions of a temperate climate, the cold winter makes possible the free flow of endogenous rhythms. In species distributed in southern regions of the temperate zone reactivation, as our data show, is essentially spontaneous and takes place in the fall because of effects of endogenous mechanisms, but approaching cool weather makes the resumption of development impossible until warmer weather in spring.
Species of ants distributed far to the north became adapted to the long, cold winter. They developed a true reactivation brought about by the cold weather, which requires a long period of life at low positive temperature. In these ants spontaneous reactivation is possible only under artificial conditions and is not complete. For the complete restoration of the capability to develop and for preservation of the viability they need a cool reactivation.
The stability of larval diapause differs significantly among ant species. In some species the diapause is quite stable and cannot be broken by the influence of high temperature and long days. Hollldobler observed that C. herculeanus and C. ligniperda larvae did not grow and stayed in diapauses for a long time under high temperature.
[...] The diapauses larvae of all such species do not take food and grow while in diapause. At the same time, in many endogenous-heterodynamic species larval dormancy is unsteady and they all need lower temperature for diapauses maintenance. Brian found that the diapause in autumn Myrmica larvae was rather unstable at 25 C and many of them pupated in this situation. We observed such thermal termination of diapauses with the pupation of almost all or of only part (depending on species) of diapauses larvae in many endogenous-heterodynamic species belonging to the genera Aphaenogaster, Crematogaster, Lasius, Lepisiota, Leptothorax, Manica and Myrmica.
In many ant species diapause in queens and workers is not stable and can easily be interrupted by the influence of above-optimum temperatures. These species are exactly the same as those listed above that have unstable larval diapauses. […] At the same time, in some species the adult diapauses is extremely stable and cannot be easily terminated by high temperatures and long days. Holldobler first observed such stable diapauses in queens of C. herculeanus and C. ligniperda kept at high temperatures. […] We found very stable queen diapauses in the same species that had similarly stable larval diapauses (listed above) and also in those species that pass winter without brood, i.e. in species of Formica and Cataglyphis, and also in Ponera coarctat.
