Swarm raiding in a Myrmicine Ant

Abstract:
Doryline ants (commonly known asarmy ants) are among the best studiedsocial animals [1]. This can be attrib-uted in large part to their dramaticraiding behavior. While the majority ofdoryline species forage in narrow col-umns, a few raid in broad swarms [1].Swarm raiding, though rare, has beenstudied intensively [1, 2], and has longbeen recognized as one of the most im-pressive examples of coordinatedgroup activity shown by animals [1].To date swarm raiding has been foundonly in doryline ants. I report the dis-covery of massive swarm raiding in themyrmicine species Pheidologeton diver-sus (Jerdon); the raids of this highlypolymorphic Asian ant (Fig. 1) areremarkably convergent with those of army ants.
