Sorry Floris, ik moet zeggen dat ik niet veel vertrouwen heb in een 'louter' wiskundige benadering die zegt dat iets onmogelijk is...Ik heb het artikel natuurlijk niet gelezen (en dat maakt niet veel uit, ik zou het waarschijnlijk toch niet volledig kunnen snappen), maar eigenlijk leid ik er enkel uit af dat ze voor 1 of 2 mogelijkheden de werking van inclusive fitness hebben afgeschreven...

Ik zou het natuurlijk echt eerst moeten nalezen maar,

In a second mathematical analysis, the team investigated how eusociality could evolve through standard natural selection. They found that a gene for eusociality could spread readily as long as the advantages it confers — increasing the lifespan and reproductive success of the queen — kick in even for small colonies. So colonies that have as few as two or three workers must provide significant advantages to their queen for the gene and the behaviour to become widespread.

Ik denk dat dit een zeer korte samenvatting is van hoe de auteurs denken, en dat dit zeker meer uitleg verdient. Als er iemand aan het artikel kan komen...

"Whether or not eusociality evolves depends on how colony size affects the mortality and fecundity of the queen," says Nowak. "Our model also shows that eusociality is hard to evolve but is very stable once it is established." [/quote]

Dat is even gemakkelijk af te leiden uit de samenstelling van de organismen in de natuur... Het feit dat een model aansluit op de realiteit bewijst het model niet volgens mij.

Ik heb er juist uit begrepen dat de theorie van 'inclusive fitness' niet nodig is om de evolutie van altruïsme te verklaren, dat 'normale' selectie voldoende is. 'Inclusive fitness' blijft wel een handig model, maar is niet noodzakelijk als verklaring en beschrijving.

Samir Okasha, a philosopher of biology at the University of Bristol, UK, agrees with the paper that inclusive fitness models rely on certain assumptions but says that these assumptions "are not as limiting" as the paper suggests.

The paper "neglects to say that inclusive fitness is a way to explain why animals would harm their own reproductive success and the answer is that they are benefiting their relatives", he says.

Stu West, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Oxford, UK, says that the new analysis is "incorrect". He says that empirical data show that the route to eusociality is through offspring helping parents, rather than through females coming together to form groups, as he says that Nowak and his team suggest.

But Nowak says that eusociality implies that offspring stay with their parents and help them to reproduce, and so "relatedness is a consequence of eusociality". But, he asks, is it also a cause of eusociality? "The answer to the question is no."

Het is blijkbaar een welles nietes spelletje. Het probleem is dat alles wat hier gezegd wordt correct is, maar niet alles met elkaar te maken heeft. Heeft Nowak de 'implies' in de laatste zin bewezen, tsja dan heeft hij gelijk. Neemt hij dat zomaar aan, dat kan hij beter zeggen dat 'Eusociality implies that offspring stay with their parents and help them reproduce according to inclusive fitness'. Ik geloof het echter niet.

Ik denk dat dit weerstand tegen de omverwerping van een theorie is. Vaak is de eenvoudige theorie de betere.

Het lijkt erop dat sommige evolutionair biologen zich er met reden niet in kunnen vinden.

In het licht hiervan vond ik het volgend stukje in de Scientific American interessant. Het gaat over vermoed altruïsme bij bacteriën.
